yesterday was my first lesson teaching English to two kids fresh from China. so naturally i was nervous as hell, teaching two kids who couldn't understand the simplest of english phrases, by me, a complete numbskull who can't verbalize the simplest of mandarin phrases. plus, it was the first lesson. impressions impressions.
surprisingly tho, it went better than i'd expected! i'd taught one kid from china before [this 18 year old sec 2 kid] who was laaaaaazy as hell, completely unresponsive, and used tuition time as stoning time so i was really apprehensive about teaching these two new ones, but thaaaaankfully they were great. as soon as i'd arrived i didn't have to wait for them to wake up for tuition, they came straight out, greeted me [greeted me!!!] notebooks and pencilcases in hand all set and ready to go! i had to practically restrain myself from kissing them in gratitude.
sure the lesson was hard, since i was totally unprepared with no material, and we were all struggling to find the simplest terms to understand each other, but in the end i think i managed to get the point across. the only weird thing was that their grandparents were sitting about 5cm away from the table, reading the papers, looking suspiciously like they were eavesdropping on the entire lesson. [i can't be sure, but i think the zero page turning throughout the one and a half hour lesson was quite a dead giveaway] who cares. they can't understand english anyways, and i guess its just the usual chinese "kiasu-ism" that they have the best for their kid. it'll let up. i hope.
anyways, the kids are great, hardworking, and the little girl is cute as hell, giving me the sort of curious attention kids give new people. i suspect she'll get on my nerves really soon since she's so hyper and restless, but hey, better that than nothing at all.
wish me luck i keep these two kids. INCOME, FINALLY!
